In case you missed it, we’re now well into March, which means that Spring has officially sprung and, if you’re one of those super organised people who likes to have their calendar planned weeks in advance, you’ll already be aware that Easter is now only a short bunny hop away.
So, as there’s now less than four weeks to go until the Easter bank holiday weekend, which this year falls between 14th – 17th April 2017, North West Digital have got a very special and eggciting Easter Egg offer, just for you, to help you get into the celebratory swing.
Easter Eggs
When we were children (we can just about remember that far back!) we never questioned the tradition of giving and receiving eggs at Easter, be they chocolate eggs or painted versions of the more traditional variety. It was just something that happened; each year, the Easter Bunny would come in the night and hide eggs all over the house for us kids to find. Yet, as we get older, it’s natural to question this cultural custom; after all, what on earth have chocolate eggs to do with a Christian festival celebrating the resurrection of Christ from the dead?

It’s a fair question, to be honest, and the answer to it may lie more in the practical nature of the early Christians than in the religious symbolism of the act. You see, before Christianity came to the British Isles, we Brits were all Pagans, whose annual ceremonies revolved around nature and the changing seasons. At this time, at the point of the Spring Equinox, we celebrated the end of Winter and the re-birth of nature, when animals would come out of hibernation and flowers and trees would suddenly ‘spring’ back into life; and the ultimate symbol of re-birth and new life was the egg.
When the first Christians arrived on our shores, they realised that the potential power of these already established customs and, instead of banning them, they simply incorporated them into their own doctrines. Hence, the egg became symbolic of the re-birth of Jesus – whose death and resurrection is celebrated over the Easter weekend – as well as representative of the empty tomb discovered after Jesus’ resurrection. No, we’re not sure about that last bit either.
Modern Day Versions
These days, it’s fair to say that the traditions of Easter have undergone some significant changes, yet the tradition of giving eggs has stayed strong. Throughout Europe, the custom of decorating and exchanging decorated eggs – whether decorated with patterns or artwork or dyed using food colouring – has remained, and many of us still partake in rituals such as egg rolling and egg tapping to this day.
However, since the introduction of the first chocolate Easter Egg, which was first marketed in England 1873 by J Fry & Sons (a company still going strong today – think Turkish Delight), many of us now prefer to exchange chocolate eggs instead of real ones laid by chickens. In India, they give marzipan eggs instead of chocolate ones, and the proliferation of different versions of sweet eggs – Cadbury Crème Eggs, Galaxy Truffle Eggs, Galaxy Caramel Eggs…the list is endless – means that we’re now spoilt for choice about what to give our loved ones at Easter.
In fact, if your family is anything like ours, come Easter morning they will be literally drowning in chocolate Easter Eggs of one variety or another, and probably be feeling like they never want to eat chocolate ever again by 11:00 am!
Our Easter Treat To You
Nevertheless, we here at North West Digital are firm believers in the old adage that there is no such thing as too much chocolate (it IS an old adage, trust us!), which is why we’re here with a very special offer to help you get even more sugar into your system over this already sugar-laden bank holiday weekend.
To celebrate Easter in style this year, we’re offering one lucky competition winner the chance to win this massive milk chocolate Easter Egg, personalised with a special Happy Easter message from us to you;

This delicious luxury egg is made using the finest milk chocolate and stands at about 30cm tall, so is guaranteed to have you feeling thoroughly sick by lunch time on Easter Sunday.
Having said that, there’s nothing in the rules to say that you have to wait until Easter Sunday to eat it at all, because, if you did, you’d only have to share it. You could always squirrel it away instead and not let on to anyone else that you have it and eat it all to yourself. We won’t tell anyone, we promise.
